<p style="text-align: left;">A personal _______________ is the most persuasive form of communication. Ads on TV exploit this powerful form to convince us to purchase what they are selling.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The Bible confirms this form of communication as well:</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Blind man</strong> – <em>“I don’t know whether he is good or bad, but I know this; I was blind and now I can see!”</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Peter &amp; John</strong> – <em>“We cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard.”</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Paul</strong> – <em>The Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so you must also testify in Rome.”</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>Jesus</strong> – <em>“I tell you the truth, we speak of what we know, and we testify to what we have seen, but still you people do not accept our testimony.”</em></p>

<p style="text-align: left;">Use the same four steps, but start with the time just prior to your recommitment. Give some examples of how you were trying to meet your own needs without Christ and how that failed, then describe what caused you to realize you needed Christ directing your life and how you made a FULL commitment to him. Then explain how Jesus is currently meeting your deepest needs in life.</p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><strong>SUGGESTIONS FOR PREPARING YOUR TESTIMONY</strong></p>
<ul style="text-align: left;">
<li>Pray and ask God to give you the right words.</li>
<li>Write your testimony out, God honors preparation.</li>
<li>Keep it short and to the point. Don’t lose sight of your goal.</li>
<li>Avoid excessive, unnecessary details.</li>
<li>Attempt to keep your testimony less than three minutes.</li>
<li>Refer to experiences most people have in common.</li>
<li>Be honest about your continuing struggles, life is never perfect!</li>
<li>Don’t imply that your problems stopped at conversion.</li>
<li>Spend most of your time on step four.</li>
<li>Emphasize WHY you received Christ, the benefits of doing it.</li>
<li>Don’t exaggerate or brag about previous sins.</li>
<li>Keep away from negative remarks about religions or other people.</li>
<li>Use very little scripture, but use one that made a difference.</li>
<li>Don’t answer questions that haven’t asked.</li>
<li>Give concrete examples of the changes in your life.</li>
<li>Dates, names and ages don’t matter, avoid them.</li>
<li>Be prepared and practice until it feels and sounds natural.</li>
<li>Read it aloud and edit it to make it conversational and humorous.</li>
<li>Let someone you know critic it and make suggestions on how to improve it.</li>
<li>Don’t sound preachy, dramatic, and mystical or talk down to people.</li>
<li>Use humor as it reduces tension and relaxes people. And please smile!</li>

<p style="text-align: left;">The universal part of your Life Message, is the Gospel of Christ, the Good News of how we can be saved, forgiven, and experience a personal relationship with Christ Jesus. The moment you are called into that relationship, you become a messenger of the Good News to others who have not heard or responded to it. And in fact, you prolong Christ’s return if you do not share.</p>

<p>As a church representing Christ, we need to intentionally reach out to the community in ways that meet their needs just as he modeled. False thinking is: “Build it and they will come.” That may be a fine premise for a movie, but the reality is people in the community will have no regard for what is going on inside our building if they don’t sense a connection outside of our building. So this next series of four weeks, which will conclude the Discipleship  University classes, will endeavor to make us think outside the confines of the church building and search for ways that we can reach out to the community with a heart-of-Jesus style love.</p>
<p><strong>STEP ONE: </strong>_______________________________________________.</p>
<p>The Great Commission of <strong>Matthew 28:18-20</strong> Jesus states:</p>
<blockquote><p>“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”</p></blockquote>

<p>God ___________ you to join Him.<strong> </strong>The Bible is the record of God’s activity in the world. In it He reveals Himself by His nature, His purposes and plans, and His ways. The Bible is not primarily a book about individual persons and their relationship with God, but rather it is about the activity of God and His relationship with individuals. The focus is on God and His activity.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>God works _______________ people.<strong> </strong>The Bible reveals that God has always been involved in the world. He has never been absent from it or from what is taking place in history. When we read the Bible, we are reading the redemptive activity of God in our world. We see that He takes the initiative and involves His people with Him. He chooses to work through them to accomplish His purposes.</p>
<p><strong> </strong></p>
<p>God makes __________ and ____________ them to His ________________.</p>
<p>The Bible reveals that when God wants to do something, He takes the initiative and invites His servants to adjust their lives so that they can complete His plans. The prophet Amos writes in Amos 3:7, “The Sovereign Lord does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.”</p>
<p>God’s revelation is my ____________________ to join Him.<strong> </strong>When we want to learn how to know and do the will of God, we can find no better example than Jesus. He perfectly executed every assignment the Father gave Him to do.</p>

I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can only do what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does. <p>This describes a love relationship through which God accomplishes His purposes. This model is not only for your personal life, but for the church. It is not a step-by-step approach or program, it is all about intimately relating to God and others.</p>
<p>The ____________ God speaks to me is the when He wants me to ____________.</p>
<p>Some of us assume that when God speaks to us that we have time to process and ponder the correct timing for doing His will. The moment God speaks to you is God’s timing! If it wasn’t time to do something, then God wouldn’t speak to you about it! So, when God speaks to you, you need to trust and believe in God.</p>
<p><strong>So how do I know when God speaks?</strong></p>
<p>There are four ways God uses to speak to us:</p>

<p>Sin has so affected us that we cannot understand the truth of God unless the Holy Spirit of God reveals it to us.</p>

<p>When the Holy Spirit teaches you the Word of God sit before Him and respond to Him. As you pray, first listen, and then watch to see how God uses the Word to confirm in your heart a word from Him. Watch and learn what He is doing around you through circumstances. The God who is speaking to you as you pray, and the in the Scriptures, is the God who is working around you in circumstances and in the church. There is no secret formula to know that God is speaking to you, but evidence from scripture shows us that every person God spoke to knew it was Him speaking to them. <strong> </strong></p>
<blockquote><p><strong>Hebrews 1:1 </strong>&#8220;In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son.&#8221;</p></blockquote>

The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. <p>One person sent me an email asking “What happened to wisdom?” <strong>Good question!</strong> And how is wisdom defined again?</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Wisdom is the special gift whereby the Spirit endows particular Christians with an understanding of God&#8217;s will and work as it relates to ________________________.</em></p></blockquote>
<p>Charles Bryant, in <em>Rediscovering the Charismata</em>, defines it as:</p>
<blockquote><p><em>“a practical application of knowledge (divine and natural) in _______________________ situations that call for the grace or favor of God.”</em></p></blockquote>
<p>It is also particularly alarming to see <strong>Faith</strong>, <strong>Teacher</strong>, and <strong>Intercession</strong> score so low. But it is greatly encouraging to see so many people list <strong>Serving</strong> as a dominant gift, and that dominance doesn’t surprise me at all.</p>
<p><strong>The Three-Tiered Implementation</strong></p>
<p>It is easier now more than ever to have an impact on your <strong>world</strong>.</p>

<p>Identifying our gifts and then thinking of implementation strictly within our body of believers is ____________ ____________ ______. There are opportunities for service in our church, in our community and in our world. The only exception I see to this rule is the role of <strong>pastor. </strong>I believe the level of personal involvement necessary as a pastor makes in impractical in a world implementation, but still very possible in the church and community.</p>

<h2>Missionary</h2>

<p>Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.  To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law.  To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God&#8217;s law but am under Christ&#8217;s law), so as to win those not having the law.  To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some.  I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Healing</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit employs certain Christians to restore health to the sick.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>James 5:13-16</strong></p>
<p>Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise.  Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.  And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.  Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective</p>
<p><strong>Luke 9:1-2</strong></p>
<p>When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Intercession</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to pray for extended periods of time with great positive effect for the building of the Kingdom.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>1Thes 3:10-13</h3>
<p>Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith.  Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus clear the way for us to come to you.  May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you.  May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.</p>
<p><strong>1 Tim 2:1-2</strong></p>
<p>I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone&#8211; for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Craftsmanship</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit endows certain Christians to use hands and minds to build up the Kingdom through artistic, creative means.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Exodus 28:3-4</h3>
<p>Tell all the skilled men to whom I have given wisdom in such matters that they are to make garments for Aaron, for his consecration, so he may serve me as priest.  These are the garments they are to make: a breastpiece, an ephod, a robe, a woven tunic, a turban and a sash. They are to make these sacred garments for your brother Aaron and his sons, so they may serve me as priests.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Hospitality</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to open their homes willingly and offer lodging, food, and fellowship cheerfully to other people.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Gen 18:1-5</h3>
<p>The LORD appeared to Abraham near the great trees of Mamre while he was sitting at the entrance to his tent in the heat of the day.  Abraham looked up and saw three men standing nearby. When he saw them, he hurried from the entrance of his tent to meet them and bowed low to the ground.  He said, &#8220;If I have found favor in your eyes, my lord, do not pass your servant by.  Let a little water be brought, and then you may all wash your feet and rest under this tree.  Let me get you something to eat, so you can be refreshed and then go on your way&#8211; now that you have come to your servant.&#8221; &#8220;Very well,&#8221; they answered, &#8220;do as you say.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2>Faith</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit provides Christians with extraordinary confidence in God&#8217;s promises, power, and presence so that they can take heroic stands for their future of God&#8217;s work in the church.</p>

<h3>Heb 11:1</h3>
<p>Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Discernment</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit certain Christians to know with assurance whether some behavior is of God or of Satan.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Acts 5:3-6</h3>
<p>Then Peter said, &#8220;Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?  Didn&#8217;t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn&#8217;t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God.&#8221;  When Ananias heard this, he fell down and died. And great fear seized all who heard what had happened.  Then the young men came forward, wrapped up his body, and carried him out and buried him.</p>
<h3>Acts 16:16-18</h3>
<p>Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling.  This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, &#8220;These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.&#8221;  She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, &#8220;In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!&#8221; At that moment the spirit left her.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Mercy</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to feel exceptional empathy and compassion for those who are suffering so that they devote large amounts of time and energy to alleviate it.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Luke 10:30-37</h3>
<p>In reply Jesus said: &#8220;A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.  A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.  So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.  But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.  He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.  The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. &#8216;Look after him,&#8217; he said, &#8216;and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.&#8217;  &#8220;Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?&#8221;  The expert in the law replied, &#8220;The one who had mercy on him.&#8221; Jesus told him, &#8220;Go and do likewise.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2>Giving</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to offer their material blessings for the work of the church with exceptional willingness, cheerfulness and liberality.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>2 Corinthians 8:1-5</h3>
<p>And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches.  Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.  For I testify that they gave as much as they were able, and even beyond their ability. Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the saints.  And they did not do as we expected, but they gave themselves first to the Lord and then to us in keeping with God&#8217;s will.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Administration</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to understand the goals of a given segment of the Church&#8217;s ministry and to direct that area effectively, keeping the Church on course.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Acts 15:12-21</h3>
<p>The whole assembly became silent as they listened to Barnabas and Paul telling about the miraculous signs and wonders God had done among the Gentiles through them.  When they finished, James spoke up: &#8220;Brothers, listen to me.  Simon has described to us how God at first showed his concern by taking from the Gentiles a people for himself.  The words of the prophets are in agreement with this, as it is written:  &#8220;&#8216;After this I will return and rebuild David&#8217;s fallen tent. Its ruins I will rebuild, and I will restore it,  that the remnant of men may seek the Lord, and all the Gentiles who bear my name, says the Lord, who does these things&#8217;  that have been known for ages.  &#8220;It is my judgment, therefore, that we should not make it difficult for the Gentiles who are turning to God.  Instead we should write to them, telling them to abstain from food polluted by idols, from sexual immorality, from the meat of strangled animals and from blood.  For Moses has been preached in every city from the earliest times and is read in the synagogues on every Sabbath.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2>Leadership</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to motivate, direct and inspire God&#8217;s people in such a way that they voluntarily and harmoniously work together to do the Church&#8217;s work effectively.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Heb 13:7</h3>
<p>Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.</p>
<h3>Judges 3:10</h3>
<p>The Spirit of the LORD came upon him, so that he became Israel&#8217;s judge and went to war. The LORD gave Cushan-Rishathaim king of Aram into the hands of Othniel, who overpowered him.</p>
<h3>Exodus 18:13-16</h3>
<p>The next day Moses took his seat to serve as judge for the people, and they stood around him from morning till evening.  When his father-in-law saw all that Moses was doing for the people, he said, &#8220;What is this you are doing for the people? Why do you alone sit as judge, while all these people stand around you from morning till evening?&#8221;  Moses answered him, &#8220;Because the people come to me to seek God&#8217;s will.  Whenever they have a dispute, it is brought to me, and I decide between the parties and inform them of God&#8217;s decrees and laws.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2>Helps</h2>
<p>It is the spiritual gift whereby the Spirit empowers certain Christians to willingly bear the burdens of other Christians and help them in such a way that they can do their tasks more effectively.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Acts 6:2-4</h3>
<p>So the Twelve gathered all the disciples together and said, &#8220;It would not be right for us to neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables.  Brothers, choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them and will give our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<h2>Serving</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit empowers certain Christians to identify unmet needs of people and implement plans to meet those needs. Serving one another, like witnessing, is a calling of all Christians, but there are some who have a special desire to find ways to serve, and get great blessing from it. There seems to be a special desire to meet physical needs in the people who have this gift.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Gal 6:1-2</h3>
<p>Brothers, if someone is caught in a sin, you who are spiritual should restore him gently. But watch yourself, or you also may be tempted.  Carry each other&#8217;s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Knowledge</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to understand in an exceptional way the great truths of God&#8217;s Word and to make them relevant to specific situations in the church.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Eph 3:14-19</h3>
<p>For this reason I kneel before the Father, from whom his whole family in heaven and on earth derives its name.  I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge&#8211; that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Wisdom</h2>
<p>See it is the special gift whereby the Spirit endows particular Christians with an understanding of God&#8217;s will and work as it relates to the living of life.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong>James 3:13-17</strong></p>
<p>Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.  But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.  Such &#8220;wisdom&#8221; does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil.  For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.  But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Exhortation</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to stand beside fellow Christians in need and bring comfort, counsel and encouragement so they feel helped.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Acts 11:23-24</h3>
<p>When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts.  He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord.</p>
<h3>Acts 14:21-22</h3>
<p>They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. &#8220;We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,&#8221; they said.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Music</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to praise God through various forms of music and enhance the worship experience of the local congregation.</p>

<p>What then shall we say, brothers? When you come together, everyone has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. All of these must be done for the strengthening of the church.</p>

<h2>Teacher</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables particular Christians to communicate the truths of God&#8217;s Word so that others can learn.</p>

<h3>Heb 5:12-14</h3>
<p>In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God&#8217;s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!  Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.  But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Pastor</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables certain Christians to assume responsibility for the spiritual welfare of a group of believers.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>1 Pet 5:1-11</h3>
<p>To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ&#8217;s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God&#8217;s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers&#8211; not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.  Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, &#8220;God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.&#8221;  Humble yourselves, therefore, under God&#8217;s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.  Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.  And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.  To him be the power for ever and ever. <h2>Evangelist</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit enables particular Christians to share the Gospel to unbelievers in such a way that the unbeliever becomes a disciple of the Lord Jesus.</p>

<p>Now an angel of the Lord said to Philip, &#8220;Go south to the road&#8211; the desert road&#8211; that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.&#8221;  So he started out, and on his way he met an Ethiopian eunuch, an important official in charge of all the treasury of Candace, queen of the Ethiopians. This man had gone to Jerusalem to worship, and on his way home was sitting in his chariot reading the book of Isaiah the prophet.  The Spirit told Philip, &#8220;Go to that chariot and stay near it.&#8221;  Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. &#8220;Do you understand what you are reading?&#8221; Philip asked.  “How can I,&#8221; he said, &#8220;unless someone explains it to me?&#8221; So he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.  The eunuch was reading this passage of Scripture: &#8220;He was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb before the shearer is silent, so he did not open his mouth.  In his humiliation he was deprived of justice. Who can speak of his descendants? For his life was taken from the earth.&#8221;  The eunuch asked Philip, &#8220;Tell me, please, who is the prophet talking about, himself or someone else?&#8221;  Then Philip began with that very passage of Scripture and told him the good news about Jesus.  As they traveled along the road, they came to some water and the eunuch said, &#8220;Look, here is water. Why shouldn&#8217;t I be baptized?&#8221;  And he gave orders to stop the chariot. Then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water and Philip baptized him.  When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing.  Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Prophet</h2>
<p>It is the special gift whereby the Spirit empowers certain Christians to interpret and apply God&#8217;s revelation in a given situation.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>1 Corinthians 14:1-5</h3>
<p>Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy.  For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him; he utters mysteries with his spirit.  But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement and comfort.  He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. He who prophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he interprets, so that the church may be edified.</p>
<p><strong>1 Corinthians 14:30-33</strong></p>
<p>And if a revelation comes to someone who is sitting down, the first speaker should stop.  For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.  The spirits of prophets are subject to the control of prophets. For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.</p>
<p><strong>1 Corinthians 14:37-40</strong></p>
<p>If anybody thinks he is a prophet or spiritually gifted, let him acknowledge that what I am writing to you is the Lord&#8217;s command.  If he ignores this, he himself will be ignored.  Therefore, my brothers, be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.  But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way.</p></blockquote>
<h2>Apostle</h2>
<p>It is the gift whereby the Spirit appoints certain Christians to lead, inspire and develop the churches of God by the proclamation and the teaching of true doctrine.</p>
<blockquote>
<h3>Acts 12:1-5</h3>
<p>It was about this time that King Herod arrested some who belonged to the church, intending to persecute them.  He had James, the brother of John, put to death with the sword.  When he saw that this pleased the Jews, he proceeded to seize Peter also. This happened during the Feast of Unleavened Bread.  After arresting him, he put him in prison, handing him over to be guarded by four squads of four soldiers each. Herod intended to bring him out for public trial after the Passover.  So Peter was kept in prison, but the church was earnestly praying to God for him.</p>
<h3>Acts 14:21-23</h3>
<p>They preached the good news in that city and won a large number of disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the disciples and encouraging them to remain true to the faith. &#8220;We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,&#8221; They said.  Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church and, with prayer and fasting, committed them to the Lord, in whom they had put their trust.</p></blockquote>
<p>As you review your results you may want to ask yourself:</p>
<ul>
<li>Do I agree with the results? Why or why not?</li>
<li>Am I using my strongest gifts? How, or what do I need to do differently?</li>
<li>Are there gifts which I&#8217;d like to make stronger? How would I do that?</li>
<li>How does what I have learned from the inventory fit into my ministries?</li>
<li>What does this exercise lead me to do now?</li>
</ul>
<p>The discernment of gifts is not a solo practice. One&#8217;s gifts should be affirmed by the community. Discuss your gifts openly with your group. If you encountered surprises, share them. If you have some doubts, discuss them humbly. Ask for feedback, support, or clarification. Contribute to the affirmation process for the others in your group.</p>

<p>The design of a small group must hold the following three things:</p>

<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">A VISION FOR THE DESIRED RESULTS AND PURPOSE.</span></strong></li>
<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">THE SPECIFIC TYPE OF GROUP AND ITS DYNAMICS.</span></strong></li>
<li><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE INVOLVED.</span></strong></li>
</ol>
<p>In small group organizing, an agreement reached by a group of people concerning the interactions and activities of their meetings is called <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">A COVENANT.</span></strong></p>
<p><strong>How Does a Covenant Help a Group Succeed?</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>It gives the group a <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">PURPOSE AND AN IDENTITY.</span></strong></li>
<li>It allows <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">THE NEEDS, HOPES AND EXPECTATIONS</span></strong> to be known at the outset.</li>
<li>It helps avoid misunderstandings <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">DUE TO      ASSUMPTIONS</span></strong> of group function.</li>
<li>It binds the group with <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">COMMITMENTS</span></strong> that      deal with <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">DREAMS.</span></strong></li>
<li>It becomes a tool to <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">COMMUNICATE</span></strong> information to <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">OTHERS.</span></strong></li>
<li>It assists the <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">LEADERS</span></strong> in carrying out <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">THEIR      FUNCTIONS.</span></strong></li>
<li>It becomes the <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">BASIS</span></strong> for <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">EVALUATION.</span></strong></li>
<li>It sets the <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">NORMS</span></strong> to refer to in times of      <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">CONFLICT</span></strong> or renegotiation.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>Different Ways Covenants Are Decided</strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">ASSUMED,</span></strong> these are sections of the covenant that are allowed to happen that are neither validated nor written.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">NEGOTIATED,</span></strong> these are sections that the group discusses and agrees to.</p>
<p><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">GIVEN,</span></strong> these are sections which are prescribed by the leader and the group participants follow and commit to as they join the group.</p>

<p>Gather around you <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">4 OR 5</span></strong> others and take about ten minutes to develop your Purpose to Action Plan using the worksheet on page 5. Then, using the Meeting Planner on page 6, plan the first two meetings together with a desired <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">RESULT.</span></strong></p>
<p>You may want to begin with a prayer like this:</p>
<p><em>Dear God, you hear us puzzling through the questions of our lives and tell us “Be at peace.” Inspire our imaginations, remind us of your faithfulness to us, and help us gather our best thoughts and dedicate them to the community you have given us. We ask this in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ.</em></p>
<p><strong>Identify a List of Prospects</strong></p>
<p>With your “Think Tank,” people around you, identify <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">3-5</span></strong> people you know who might be excited about joining your group, make a list of names and phone numbers and then call and tell them about the group. Make note about their <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">RESPONSE</span></strong> and any referrals they might have about possible prospects, and if there are any special needs they might require that you have not covered.</p>
<p><strong>Design a Meeting Reminder</strong></p>
<p>This step may seem minor, but it is very helpful. Take a moment to design a <strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">REMINDER</span></strong> card and to designate a reminder phone caller/s for each prospective member of your group to be contacted a couple of days before your first meeting.</p>
<p><strong><em>These important steps will move you toward actually launching your small group successfully.</em></strong></p>
